A World War I German Iron Cross 2nd Class, with the familiar black iron core framed by a silver border. The obverse bears the crowned “W” cipher of Kaiser Wilhelm II above the date “1914.” The reverse displays a crowned “FW” cipher for King Friedrich Wilhelm III above oak leaves and the date “1813,” commemorating the decoration’s original institution during the Napoleonic Wars. This example is a standard two-piece construction with an iron center and silver frame, showing remnants of the original blackened finish. Mounted on a period black and white combatant’s ribbon, fitted to a pin-back suspension. The Iron Cross 2nd Class was awarded to soldiers of all ranks for acts of bravery or distinguished leadership in the field. Dimensions: 1.75 x 1.75 in., overall height with ribbon 3.75 in.
