Japanese Meiji Period Carved Ivory Monkey Cane with Articulated Baby. An outstanding Japanese Meiji-period ivory figural cane, showcasing the artistry and whimsy characteristic of the era’s finest carving. The handle features a delightful composition of a monkey family climbing over a hollowed tree trunk. At the top, a mother monkey leans attentively over a broken branch, rendered with expressive facial features and careful attention to anatomical detail. Beneath her, several young monkeys scale the bark. Notably, nestled within the hollow of the stump is a baby monkey mounted on a pivot, which rocks gently back and forth—a rare articulated feature that brings kinetic life to the piece. The carving is further enhanced with pierced openings and delicately inked hair striations. A Japanese signature cartouche appears on the reverse. The handle is mounted on a possibly sterling silver collar of foliate design and affixed to a sleek, tapering dark hardwood shaft terminating in a plain metal ferrule. Length of Shaft : Approx. 31.75 in. Length of Handle : Approx. 4.5 in. Total Length: Approx. 36.25 in. This lot may be picked up free of charge in Gardnerville, NV. Shipping via FedEx Ground/Home available within the continental U.S. for $100.
