At the top, a mother monkey leans attentively over a broken branch, rendered with expressive facial features and careful attention to anatomical detail. Beneath her, several young monkeys scale the bark. Notably, nestled within the hollow of the stump is a baby monkey mounted on a pivot, which rocks gently back and forth—a rare articulated feature that brings kinetic life to the piece. The carving is further enhanced with pierced openings and delicately inked hair striations. A Japanese signature cartouche appears on the reverse.
