A fine WWII German Kriegsmarine Blockade Runner Badge (Hilfskreuzerabzeichen), designed by Otto Placzek and produced by Schwerin, Berlin. Struck in tombac and finished in silver and darkened highlights, the obverse depicts a large eagle flying over the bow of an armed merchant vessel with a swastika in its talons, framed by a chain border. The reverse bears crisp raised maker’s marks “Fec. Otto Placzek Berlin” and “Ausf. Schwerin Berlin.” Instituted in 1941, this badge was awarded to officers and crew members of German auxiliary cruisers for participation in successful long-range raiding operations against Allied shipping.
