An outstanding and richly embellished early American eaglehead officer’s saber, likely intended for a mounted artillery or cavalry officer. The design reflects high rank and ceremonial purpose, with intricate patriotic detail and excellent retention of original finish.
The brass hilt features a D-shaped guard adorned with feathered knuckle bow, and dual shield-shaped langets bearing detailed American eagles with Union shields. The faceted backstrap and finely carved bone grip with spiral fluting elevate the aesthetic presentation. Approximately 80% of the original gilt finish is retained across the hilt surfaces.
The wide, curved blade has a single shallow fuller, and is extensively decorated with alternating bands of blued and bright acid-etched panels. One side features:
A stand of arms with pole and Liberty Cap, flanked by an oval stars-and-stripes shield
A bright panel with laurel leaves encircling another Liberty Cap
Additional florals and patriotic motifs throughout

Condition
Hilt and grip excellent. Brass hilt retains ~80% gilt. Bone grip shows slight age staining but remains tight and undamaged. Blade retains strong blue and gilt etching, with a dark patch and scattered pitting along the back, and minor rust in the lower bright portion. Felt pads are glued to the flat and one langet. A small old tape stain is located ~2 inches from the guard. No scabbard.
