The design reflects high rank and ceremonial purpose, with intricate patriotic detail and excellent retention of original finish. The brass hilt features a D-shaped guard adorned with feathered knuckle bow, and dual shield-shaped langets bearing detailed American eagles with Union shields. The faceted backstrap and finely carved bone grip with spiral fluting elevate the aesthetic presentation. Approximately 80% of the original gilt finish is retained across the hilt surfaces. The wide, curved blade has a single shallow fuller, and is extensively decorated with alternating bands of blued and bright acid-etched panels.
