An original Remington Zouave Rifle in .58 caliber percussion, 33" barrel, dated 1863, no serial number.
Has an original brass tompion and two spare nipples in the brass patch box. These rifles have been described as the handsomest rifles of the Civil War, although there is some question as to whether they were ever actually issued or used during the War. It is known that after the War a number were sold to Brazil, where they were greatly admired. The steel of the barrel and lock are blued, and the furniture of the rifle is brass, and the government referred to these as the "Harper's Ferry pattern," due to their resemblance to the Mississippi rifle of 1841. The lock plate has the date 1863 stamped on the tail of the lock, a fine eagle over US, and Remington's Ilion N.Y. The wood has strong inspectors' cartouches.
Dimensions: 49" long overall.
