.50-Bore (nominally .45 caliber). 6.125" octagonal barrel. NSN. Blued and color casehardened finish, checkered and carved one piece walnut grip. Single action transitional gas seal percussion revolver with six-chambered unfluted cylinder, toggle link loading lever, fixed notch rear sight and dovetailed blade front sight. Frame and lower web of barrel lightly engraved with traditional English style foliate scrolls and simple border lines. Color casehardened frame engraved on the left side in three lines: "WITTON & DAW/THREADNEEDLE ST/LONDON". Top flat of barrel engraved in a single line:  "Witton & Daw's IMPROVED 57 THREADNEEDLE ST LONDON." Witton & Daw were located at this address circa 1855-1860. A lozenge shaped German silver grip escutcheon is engraved in stylized script: "FBC/to/ES" with the first set of initials difficult to decipher. The revolver is contained in its original compartmentalized  English oak retailer's case with paper Witton & Daw label inside the lid and a green baize lining. The case contains two lidded compartments and a variety of accessories both related and unrelated to the revolver, including a fluted copper powder flask, a Japanned Eley Brothers cap tin, a pewter oiler by Hawksley and a number of small tools and accessories. The escutcheon on the top of the case is engraved in four lines: "Eugene Sherwood/Esqr/Land Transport/Corps."

Eugene Sherwood (1828-1912) was born in England and was educated at Eton before reaching a commission in the British Army, where he achieved the rank of captain. He then practiced law in London before departing from the United Kingdom for San Francisco in 1856. Sherwood came to America representing an English land syndicate that was looking to acquire agricultural land in the post-Gold Rush boom state of California. Sherwood recognized the potential of the fertile Salinas Valley in Monterey County, California and proceeded to acquire large traces of land there on behalf of the syndicate. In 1868 he was credited with helping to lay out the town of Salinas and in traditional English fashion, donated some parcels of the privately held land for public use, including land for churches, schools, parks and public buildings. With the expansion of the western railroads in early the 1870s, he donated land for use of Southern Pacific Railroad, cementing Salinas as a rail stop and thus commercial center in the area. Sherwood's efforts to help Salinas grow and to make it an important regional town for trade and transpiration helped to make Salinas the county seat for Monterey County. Sherwood was largely responsible for laying the foundation to make Salinas the vibrant city that it became and remains today. {ANTIQUE}

Very Good to Near Fine. Bore near fine, lightly oxidized and retaining strong micro-goove rifling. Barrel retains much of the orange blued finish with crisp engraving and markings. Frame and cylinder with strong traces of faded and dulled case coloring, again retaining crisp engraving and markings. The revolver remains mechanically functional, timing, indexing and locking up as it should. The gas seal system remains functional as well, with the cylinder correctly moving forward to create the gas seal when fired.
