A World War I British “hate belt” constructed on a striped fabric belt and mounted with a diverse assortment of British Army regimental badges, shoulder titles, and uniform buttons.
The assemblage includes identifiable units such as the Border Regiment, East Lancashire Regiment, Royal West Kent (R.W.K.), Tyneside Scottish / Tyneside units, and other British formations. Additional devices include crowns, lion motifs, and General Service buttons, along with various regimental numerals and insignia. A “Canada” title and other Commonwealth elements are also present, reflecting the mixing typical of soldier-assembled examples.
The belt is assembled in the traditional trench art manner, likely by a serviceman collecting badges from units encountered during service or through trade and battlefield recovery. The varied regimental representation and layered construction reflect the broader composition of British and Commonwealth forces during the First World War.
